Senior Preservation Services Manager, Historic New England (Lyman Estate, Waltham, MA)

Description: The preservation services team at Historic New England currently has an opening for a Senior Preservation Services Manager who will drive engagement in historic preservation throughout the region by coordinating innovative public programs and services. This position is responsible for identifying key issues impacting the historic preservation of resources across the New England region and developing public programs, workshops, lectures, and other outreach activities that will advance Historic New England’s preservation priorities. Candidates who are interested in thinking strategically about challenges in the field of historic preservation and advancing new directions in preservation practice are encouraged to apply.

This position also participates in the management of the organization’s preservation easements by visiting historic properties and meeting with property owners to assess conditions, provide treatment recommendations, troubleshoot maintenance issues, and review project requests. Historic New England’s Preservation Easement Program is widely considered to be a national model for protecting private homes and provides comprehensive protection to some of New England’s most significant private residential architecture.

Maintaining a strong network among our preservation partners in the region is essential, as is interest in engaging with local agencies and commissions on a limited basis to respond to preservation advocacy issues at Historic New England’s public sites.

This position pays in the mid $50,000s dependent on experience.

Qualifications: Requires a bachelor’s degree in historic preservation or a closely related field and six years job-related experience. Master’s degree in those fields listed above is preferred as is demonstrated experienced with public outreach and/or program management. Qualified candidates will demonstrate the ability to operate effectively in a team environment, where communication with a regionally dispersed team and public audience is essential to success.

Knowledge of New England architectural history and state and local preservation regulations is required. Experience with the application of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties is a must, as well as the ability to read architectural drawings. Requires fully competent computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office programs. Exceptional written and oral communication skills and the ability to work closely with donors, professional colleagues, and the general public are expected.
