Immediate Opening: Senior Architectural Historian (Huntsville, AL)

Tennessee Valley Archaeological Research (TVAR) seeks to fill an immediate opening for a Senior Architectural Historian based in our Huntsville, Alabama headquarters. The ideal candidates possess at least three (3) years of experience conducting architectural surveys to identify above ground cultural resources that potentially meet the criteria for National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility and effects assessments concerning historic properties. Additionally, experience with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and with local guidelines and regulations in states where projects are proposed. TVAR works across the southeastern United States, which requires travel throughout the region for field assessments and surveys.

Responsibilities:
       
The Senior Architectural Historian must possess the capability and experience to interpret data collected in the field, including an ability to identify and describe
vernacular and formal architectural styles, accurately date above ground cultural resources based upon style and context, and assess a resource's NRHP eligibility potential. In addition, the position requires the knowledge and ability to assess potential effects to historic properties caused by federal undertakings.
     
Supervise a small team of professionals in survey and report writing, edit reports, and maintain budgets and timelines.
   
Create project proposals, including budget spreadsheets.
      
Conduct fieldwork in the form of architectural surveys, often in rural and remote areas.
      
Communicate and collaborate with clients, which include federal entities, local and state governments, and private companies/individuals. Communicate and work with state historic preservation office officials.
    
Oversee and participate in NRHP nominations for a variety of clients.

Experience and skill with digital cameras of various types and the ability to take clear photographs at the required dimensions.
       
Excellent communications skills, particularly writing abilities, and interpersonal skills are essential for the successful candidate. This position requires the writing
of proposals, letters, reports, and the ability to communicate clearly with not
only historians and architectural historians but also archaeologists, project
managers, and clients.
     
Ability to work with and regularly communicate with colleagues and to take direction from supervisors and project managers

Requirements:
      
MA or MS degree in Art History, Architectural History, American Studies, Historic Preservation, or other closely related field. Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s qualification standards for Historic Preservation and/or Architectural Historian.
    
At least three years of experience as a professional architectural historian in the US (Southeast preferred)
    
Experience in performing work compliant with Section 106 of the National Historic
Preservation Act
      
Candidate must be hard-working, good-natured, capable of working with others, capable of giving clear explanations and direction, capable of taking direction from project managers and supervisors
    
Demonstrated ability to plan, staff, organize, and supervise architectural/cultural resource surveys and report writing/editing consistent with Section 106 requirements.
       
Demonstrated experience in NRHP nominations.
       
Valid drivers license and reliable transportation is required.

Other Desirable Knowledge and Experience:
       
Experience with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop a plus.

Experience with ArcGIS desirable.
     
Publications related to architectural history, a plus.
