Hiring Preservation Planner/Architectural Historian, VHB Environmental Resources Group (New England office)

VHB’s Environmental Resources Group is seeking a full-time preservation planner to work with our expanding cultural resources group. Key responsibilities include the preparation of environmental and planning-related documents for transportation, planning, and land development projects and state and federal historic tax credit projects.

Responsibilities:
  • Identify cultural resources and assist with evaluation surveys for public and private sector clients.
  • Assist with fulfilling technical components of cultural resource, environmental and
  • planning-related documents for transportation and land development
  • projects. Tasks will include identifying and evaluating historic properties, assessing project-related impacts, and technical writing.
  • Support Section 106 and other applicable federal, state, and local historic preservation reviews
  • Work closely with our Watertown Cultural Resource team in consultation and negotiation with SHPOs, government officials, and consulting parties.
  • Assist with preparing historic tax credit applications to state and federal review agencies.
  • Support other VHB departments and regional offices with historic preservation planning, site history research, and compliance services.
  • Assist Cultural Resources senior staff in scoping, managing, and tracking projects and proposals and in marketing group services within and outside VHB.

Requirements: Qualified candidates will have a minimum of BS/BA in Preservation Studies or closely related discipline and 3-5 years of experience, or MS/MA and 2-4 years of experience; working knowledge of the National Register criteria, Section 106 regulations; excellent writing and communication skills and research capabilities.
  • A BA/BS degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Preservation Planning, or closely related discipline (MA/MS is preferred)
  • Excellent research, writing, and photography skills
  • Experience with historic property research
  • Familiarity with architectural styles, forms, development periods, and ability to recognize and describe character-defining historic features
  • Knowledge of the history and architectural history of New England
  • Ability to apply the National Register criteria for eligibility to evaluate historic integrity
  • An understanding of the application of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties
  • Fluency in reading architectural drawings
  • Experience with federal and state cultural resource management; a working command of federal and state cultural resource and historic preservation statutes and regulations, including Section 106, is a plus
The ideal candidate must be detail oriented, have a professional demeanor and strong organizational skills, and possess the ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and multitask in a fast-paced environment. The candidate should be able to work in a team environment with a variety of project members and manage tasks as delegated by a project lead. The candidate must possess strong communication skills including writing skills and the ability to work closely with clients.
