2020 Bero-Howk Preservation Summer Internship, Bero Architecture / The Landmark Society of Western New York (Rochester, NY)

We are pleased to announce that we are seeking qualified applicants for the tenth annual Bero-Howk Preservation Internship. The internship, established in 2010, seeks to provide a unique specialized historic preservation experience for a qualified architectural intern. During their time in Rochester, New York, the intern will be exposed to architectural preservation work at Bero Architecture and preservation research, advocacy, and educational programming at the Landmark Society of Western New York. Applications will be accepted between March 9th and April 19th, 2020. A decision can be expected by April 27th, 2020.

The Landmark Society of Western New York, Inc. (LSWNY), is one of the oldest and most active preservation organizations in America, organized in 1937, preceding by ten years the founding of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, of which it is a charter member. It is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to preserving, interpreting and fostering interest in the architectural, historical and cultural heritage of the Western New York region. PURPOSE:
Promote an interest in and deeper understanding of historic preservation in the architecture.


DESCRIPTION

General
  1. Bero Architecture PLLC contact: Jennifer Ahrens, Principal.
  2. LSWNY contacts: Cynthia Howk, Architectural Research Coordinator, and Caitlin Meives, Preservation Planner.
  3. Ten-week summer internship period. Specific dates to be coordinated between parties. Weeks to be consecutive unless coordinated and agreed to by all parties.
  4. Thirty to thirty-five hours per week commitment, six to seven hours per day, five days per week. Hours are somewhat flexible, specific hours to be coordinated between parties.
  5. Three days per week working at Bero Architecture, two days per week working at the LSWNY. Specific days at each location to be coordinated by all parties. Bero Architecture and LSWNY may agree to change location during any given week.
  6. Intern will coordinate specific work and time with the primary contacts.
  7. Intern will be an employee of Bero Architecture. A fixed bi-weekly wage will be paid by Bero Architecture. Compensation rate will be provided by Bero Architecture with the internship offer.
Type of Assignments
  1. Interns will work on preservation related projects that provide insight into historic preservation architecture. The blend of preservation fundamentals offered by the LSWNY and the preservation architecture and general architectural basics offered by Bero Architecture will provide for a well-rounded experience.
  2. Interns will spend the majority of their time on programming and research with the LSWNY and historic preservation related activities with Bero Architecture rather than basic filing or fundraising activities.

ELIGIBILITY / QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants shall meet the following criteria.
  1. Currently enrolled in or completed work at a college having completed a minimum of three years in an accredited professional program in either architecture or historic preservation.
  2. Documented history of interest and involvement in historic preservation.
  3. Technical writing ability.
  4. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, and Autodesk AutoCAD.

SUBMISSION
Submit the following to Bero Architecture:
  1. Basic architectural resume and portfolio.
  2. Technical writing sample (preferably related to historic preservation).
  3. Description and documentation of prior interest and involvement in preservation.
  4. One to three Letters of Recommendation.
