AFNHA AmeriCorps Community Heritage Development Positions, Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area (Elkins, West Virginia)

Join the AFNHA AmeriCorps team and help West Virginia rural communities to accomplish actual on-the-ground results for projects that conserve, develop and enhance natural, heritage and community assets in order to protect the environment and increase economic development based on heritage tourism. Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area is an 18 county initiative to develop heritage tourism and conservation of forest heritage assets. AFNHA AmeriCorps program offers a variety of community development positions with community development and historic preservation organizations, including non-profit cultural and tourism development initiatives, heritage museums and historic sites. Other program positions include conservation field work, environmental education, and community conservation and outreach.  College degree or significant life experience preferred, candidates fresh out of high school are unlikely to succeed. Skills sought for community heritage positions can vary – communications, public administration, tourism, historic preservation, art, history, anthropology, museum studies, or business background could all be applicable. Training in specific skills will be provided.

Start of term is September 9, 2020, for 11 1/2 month commitment. Applications encouraged now and will be filled on a rolling basis. Some other start dates may be possible, and applications will be accepted past start date if not all positions are filled. COVID safety measures will be observed.

Help revitalize rural communities through community development and cultural heritage development positions with AFNHA AmeriCorps.  Live in outstandingly beautiful surroundings and benefit dynamic rural communities preserving their rich heritage.  Community heritage development members assist rural communities with improvement projects based on community assets and help build locally-based tourism. They assist local non-profits, museums and arts groups with conserving and interpreting their heritage and with cultural heritage development. Duties may include research and interpretation, exhibit development, collections management, archaeology, tourism development, outreach, community organizing, and volunteer management.  See www.appalachianforestnha.org/americorps for current openings to choose from.
