Hiring a remote Architectural Historian based in the Southeast, TerraXplorations, Inc. (TerraX)

TerraXplorations, Inc. (TerraX) is a full-service cultural resource management firm specializing in archaeology, architectural history, and geophysics. Since 2012, we have grown to a team of more than 50 employees, and in 2019 alone, TerraX completed more than 400 projects throughout the Southeast. 

TerraX is seeking an Architectural Historian whose main role will be to evaluate federally funded projects in compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA, with occasional other tasks relating to architectural history and archival research. The ideal candidate will have prior experience reviewing projects through the Section 106 process and strong technical writing, analytical, and research abilities. Applicants should live in the Southeast (FL, GA, AL, LA, MS) with the ability to work remotely and occasionally travel to project sites.   

Job Functions
  • Plan and execute evaluation of historic resources through the Section 106 review process from initial project phases to completion, including: delineate the area of potential effect and identify historic resources within it; create succinct instructions for field crew to identify and photograph historic resources; write technical reports evaluating NRHP eligibility using the Secretary of Interior’s standards
  • Research and write developmental histories and historic contexts·       Communicate with remote colleagues across disciplines to ensure projects are executed thoroughly and on-time
  • Communicate professionally with clients, SHPO personnel, state department of transportation personnel, etc. to ensure all deliverables are completed according to their standards
  • Work under limited supervision from home office and on the road
  • Track expenses and submit expenses incurred 
Qualifications
  • Experience evaluating resources through the Section 106 review process
  • Experience planning and executing architectural surveys
  • Experience evaluating resources for NRHP eligibility using the Secretary of Interior’s standards 
  • Experience utilizing a variety of primary and secondary sources to research historic resources and develop contextual narratives
  • Thorough knowledge of architectural history, particularly in the southeastern United States
  • Fluency in architectural terminology and the Secretary of the Interior’s standards
  • Willingness to constructively receive feedback regarding evaluations and determinations of project effects
  • Familiarity with Adobe InDesign 
Education
  • Master’s degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History, or a related field 
Additional Requirements
  • Self-motivated and able to prioritize projects with limited supervision·       Excellent writing skills
  • Ability to work remotely and travel regionally as needed (likely no more than 1-2 times/month)
  • Availability up to 40 hours per week 

The Architectural Historian position is full-time and paid hourly with health and dental insurance benefits available. Compensation will be $40,000-45,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
