President-elect Biden Selects Congresswoman Deb Haaland to Lead the Department of Interior

From Preservation Action:

This week President-elect Joe Biden announced his historic selection of Congresswoman Deb Haaland(D-NM) as the next Secretary of the Department of Interior. Rep. Haaland would become the first Native American to lead the department. She was elected to Congress in 2018 as one of the first two Native Amercan women elected to Congress. In October, Rep. Haaland provided a special message during Preservation Action Foundation's All in for Advocacy Virtual Event and Auction where she spoke on the importance of funding historic preservation offices and grants programs in helping to tell the full story of our country. Watch the video.

During her time in Congress, Rep. Haaland quickly became one of the biggest champions of protecting historic and cultural resources. She served as the Vice Chair of the House Natural Resources Committee and as Chair of the National Parks, Forests and Public Lands Subcommittee. With her first piece of legislation she introduced the ANTIQUITIES Act (H.R 1050) which aims to protect America's National Monuments from attempts to eliminate or reduce their size. Rep. Haaland also helped lead the effort earlier this year to permanently reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund and establish dedicated funding to address the deferred maintenance backlog at our National Parks and other public lands. She signed on to the Historic Preservation Fund dear colleague letter in 2019 and 2020, which each year called for a record level of funding for the Historic Preservation Fund. She's also a member of the Historic Preservation Caucus.

The Department of Interior manages roughly one-fifth of the land in the United States. As Interior Secretary, she'd be responsible for overseeing 422 national park sites and National Monuments, including numerous historic sites. The Interior Department oversees some of our most important historic preservation programs. Programs like the Land and Water Conservation Fund, the Historic Preservation Fund, and the Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit Program.
