Legislation Reestablishing a State Historic Tax Credit Passes the Michigan House

Yesterday, the Michigan House voted 81-24 to pass Senate Bill 54, legislation reestablishing a state historic tax credit in Michigan. The bill already passed the Senate 32-5 earlier this month and now goes to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's desk, where she is expected to sign it into law. This bill creates a 25% historic tax credit for commercial and residential properties with a $5 million aggregate cap. Michigan's Governor included $5 million for the program in her state budget in October. Michigan has been without a state historic tax credit program since the program was zeroed out in 2011.

This is great news for Michigan! Congratulations to all of the advocates in Michigan for their sustained, years-long advocacy efforts to get this important bill across the finish line. Continue to follow our partners at Michigan Historic Preservation Network, who helped lead this effort, as they role out additional educational sessions and materials on the new tax credit program in early 2021.
