Historic Preservation Blog from PreservationDirectory.com - Internship, Historic Preservation, Historic Easements, Utah, Salt Lake City
Contributed By: Kelsey Maas

Website: https://preservationutah.org/

Project
Conduct inspections of the 126 properties on which Preservation Utah holds historic preservation easements.  The process involves sending pre-inspection
letters to property owners, documenting each elevation of the buildings with photographs and a written assessment, evaluating changes in the condition of the buildings since the previous inspection (2019-20), making recommendations to property owners in a follow-up letter, and writing a summary of the inspection findings for the Board of Trustees.

Time Frame
The project will require 10 weeks to complete. You may select the 10-week period between May 1 and August 31 which best fits your summer schedule. This role is part time.

Qualifications
We are seeking a current student from the field(s) of Anthropology, Architecture, Conservation, History, Historic Preservation or other relevant historic preservation disciplines. Both graduate and undergraduate students are welcome to apply. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills, great organizational skills, general knowledge of historic site documentation, general photography experience, and basic proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite. Preference will be given to applicants with some or all of the following background: knowledge of preservation easements, preservation or construction technology, building documentation, and architectural history of the Western U.S.

Benefits
Stipend of $2,500.00 plus mileage allowance. This internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain a working knowledge of a large and active easement program and a statewide historic preservation organization. In addition, we will be happy to work with you to arrange academic credit or matching stipend for the internship should your program permit. The weekly schedule is quite flexible, provided the work is completed within the arranged time frame. Finally, you can spend a summer in Salt Lake City with hiking, biking, and boating only minutes away and Moab, Jackson Hole, Zion National Park, the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, and the Uintah Mountains within a day’s drive.

Application
For more information, please contact Kelsey Maas, Associate Director. To apply, send a cover letter stating your qualifications and resume by April 1, 2021 via email to kelsey@preservationutah.org.
