The German Village Society (GVS) is seeking an Assistant Director, Historic Preservation. This position serves a central role in carrying out the core mission of the GVS, ensuring its ongoing commitment to serve as a Caretaker of a Legacy by embracing both the rewarding opportunities and complex challenges of historic preservation in a vibrant neighborhood situated in a dynamically evolving city.

Founded in 1960, the GVS, a non-profit organization, has established a 60-year track record of successfully strengthening, enhancing, promoting, and protecting German Village, one of the preeminent historic districts in the United States. Saved from destruction in the mid-twentieth century, German Village was designated as a local historic district by the city of Columbus in 1963, listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, named as a “Preserve America Community” in 2007, and recognized as a “Top 10 Great Neighborhood” by the American Planning Association in 2011.

Overview
The Assistant Director, Historic Preservation will be responsible for leading the efforts and activities that seek to preserve the historic fabric of German Village. Because the GVS is a membership-driven organization, one major sphere of responsibilities for the Assistant Director, Historic Preservation will entail serving as a liaison, resource, and collaborator with residents on issues and matters germane to historic preservation. Working with both individual GVS members, the organization’s Historic Preservation Committee, and the GVS Board of Trustees, the Assistant Director will provide expertise, leadership, and support to address and engage the ongoing and emerging historic preservation issues facing the neighborhood. At the same time, the Assistant Director will also assume a vital ambassadorial and advocacy role on behalf of the GVS and its mission with stakeholders at the local and state levels, most notably with the German Village Commission, the City of Columbus Historic Preservation Office, City Council and the State Historic Preservation Office.

Given such a wide-ranging portfolio in the service of numerous constituencies, excellent oral and written communication skills are essential for success in this position. In the spirit of shared endeavor, the Assistant Director will play a crucial role in mobilizing the extraordinary passion and commitment of the German Village community to retain the character and distinction of the neighborhood while nurturing a thriving and contemporary community. Organization, adaptability, and enthusiasm are essential for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Educate and advocate for historic preservation issues using online and print media, group presentations, tours, visitor maps.
  • Support Fund for Historic Preservation Committee and its funded projects.

  • Report to the Executive Director and GVS Board of Trustees.
  • Be an engaged and visible member of the GVS in-office team by providing effective customer service and support and assisting with the day-to-day functioning of the Meeting Haus.
