Lexington Historical Society Searching for Executive Director (Lexington, MA)

Lexington Historical Society in Lexington, Massachusetts seeks an experienced Executive Director to provide strategic thinking and hands-on management for a vibrant organization serving the local community and visitors from around the world. The Society manages and interprets three historic house museums with significant connections to the Battle of Lexington, provides stewardship of important collections and archives spanning three centuries of Lexington history, and provides year-round programming to the community at its Lexington Center headquarters and program center as well as on a virtual platform. The Society has a paid staff of seven year-round full-time and part-time employees, thirty seasonal employees, several hands-on volunteer committees, and over fifty local volunteers. The Executive Director is responsible for managing the annual budget of $600,000 as well as growing and preserving the Endowment.
 
Lexington Historical Society has grown considerably in recent years and requires a director who is experienced in building strong relationships with current donors, as well as stewarding relationships with potential donors and funders – both individuals and corporations. The director should be also be skilled at fostering productive partnerships with other organizations in Lexington and beyond in order to advance the mission of Lexington Historical Society and increase engagement. The organization is actively trying to increase its membership base, so a proven track record of strong membership cultivation is desired. 


The Director’s primary role is to manage staff and serve as liaison between the Board of Directors, committees, and staff in order to pursue organizational goals. 

The Executive Director will possess the following
qualifications:

  • A demonstrated interest in and understanding of American history and enthusiasm for sharing it with the public;
  • An advanced degree in museum administration, history, archives management, or the equivalent;
  • At least five years of management experience in an historical or similar non-profit organization;
  • Strong experience in accounting, finance, building and monitoring an annual budget, buildings management, and personnel management;
  • A proven track record of successful fundraising and grant-writing;
  • A strong knowledge of museum best practices;
  • Proficiency with workplace technology including GSuite, Zoom, Constant Contact, Microsoft Office, Excel; as well as an appreciation for the role of the organization’s website, online store, and social media in expanding the Society's engagement and outreach efforts;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work well with staff, Board members, volunteers, town officials, community organizations, and collaborative partners;
  • A commitment to Lexington Historical Society’s pledge to interpret Lexington’s diverse history in an inclusive, anti-racist manner.

This is a full-time position. Yearly salary range is $70,000-$90,000, commensurate with experience. Lexington Historical Society provides generous vacation, sick time, and personal time, but no medical benefits.
