Adventures in Preservation is celebrating 20 years of actively working with communities to save their architectural heritage. With proper precautions, we will get back to what we love in August 2021. Hands-on projects are planned in the US in Montana and Virginia. Project outside the US – in Ecuador, Scotland and Armenia – are dependent on the COVID situation and government restrictions. If you’ve been vaccinated and are comfortable with socially distanced hands-on preservation, we hope you’ll join us at a project.
La Esperanza, Ecuador
August 14-27, 2021
The people of La Esperanza are waiting to welcome AiP. The heart of their community is their church & convent, which embodies the history and cultural life of the town. You’ll spend a week making vital repairs and then head out to tour the remarkable Galapagos Islands. Registration deadline is May 1.
Bannack Ghost Town, Montana
August 15-21, 2021
Bannack’s first group of AiP jammers took on preservation of exterior logs at the gold rush era Jackson House. We return to the ghost town in August to repair interior lath and plaster walls and ceiling. Take time to walk the dusty streets lined with 60 buildings from the 1860s.
Dunans Castle, Scotland
September 4-18, 2021
We’ve been waiting 2 years to get inside the castle turret! If conditions in Scotland allow, we’ll finally start work in the castle in September. Eland Stuart, an expert in traditional building, will work with us each day, teaching lime mortar repointing. Then we’ll head out to explore this beautiful coastal region.
Timberneck Farm, Virginia
October 3-9, 2021
Be one of the first to work on Timberneck farmhouse, inside Virginia’s newest state park. The Machicomoco State Park celebrates the remarkable legacy of the region’s native peoples. The c. 1800 house will honor the first inhabitants by featuring exhibits of Virginia’s tribes. We’ll also spend a day at nearby Fairfield plantation experiencing an archaeological dig.
If you’re looking ahead to 2022, project information is available on the Adventures in Preservation website at: www.adventuresinpreservation.org.
