The Virginia SHPO currently has three new positions under recruitment:

The Community Outreach Coordinator will manage DHR's outreach to African American and indigenous communities in Virginia with the goal of identifying, evaluating and protecting historic resources associated with these constituencies. The position offers a career opportunity for an individual to design a program to increase outreach and recordation of historic sites associated with African American and Native American communities. This new initiative will require the development of an internship program in partnership with Virginia Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), a targeted survey grants program, and other strategies to enhance site information in DHR's GIS-based inventory system (VCRIS).  To be considered for this position a completed state application must be received through the on-line employment system by FRIDAY, MAY 21, 2021 at http://jobs.virginia.gov.

DHR is also seeking an experienced Archaeologist to develop and implement a long-range underwater archaeology program in Virginia. The selected individual will work independently creating a framework for and administering an extensive inventory program underwater resources, both coastal and inland. The program objectives include conducting archival research of potential submerged cultural resources lying on state-owned bottomlands; identifying sites of potential State and National Register significance; identifying geographical areas of high cultural resource density; identifying areas of high research potential, in conjunction with state guidelines; identifying areas of most probable negative impact, due to construction, erosion, salvage, etc.; and developing and implementing a preservation action plan for the investigation of those submerged cultural resources, based upon the above research data. To be considered for this position a completed state application must be received through the on-line employment system by, FRIDAY, MAY 14, 2021 at http://jobs.virginia.gov.

The Cemetery Preservationist offers a career opportunity for an individual responsible for developing, implementing, and managing a comprehensive historic preservation program for historic cemeteries including the identification, recording, evaluation, registration (if warranted), and appropriate treatment/stewardship of both marked and unmarked cemeteries throughout the state and their markers, gravestones, monuments, fencing, etc. Duties: management of DHR’s African American Cemetery and Graves Fund and the Revolutionary War Cemeteries and Graves Fund; DHR’s Burial Permits program; works closely with local governments, civic/historical organizations, nonprofit organizations, owners and managers of historic cemeteries, educational and religious institutions, the archaeological community, DHR staff, and the general public. This position requires extensive public contact through site visits, presentations, workshops, and managing DHR’s quarterly cemetery newsletter. To be considered for this position a completed state application must be received through the on-line employment system by, MONDAY MAY 24, 2021 at http://jobs.virginia.gov.
