The role:

We are looking for a qualified architectural historian to join our cultural resources team. This position will assist with regional transportation project delivery and be responsible for coordination with regulators and other stakeholders as needed.

The purpose of this position is to be a staff expert in the fields of historic preservation, architecture, cultural analysis, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the Federal Highway Administration's Section 4(f).  This individual analyzes and documents the impacts of projects and other department activities on historic properties. Research includes scoping projects, conducting field surveys, and document searches.

A day in the life:
  • Perform research to assess the effects of transportation projects on cultural resources in accordance with Federal and State historic preservation laws and
  • regulations.
  • Interpret rules and regulations and develop procedures for research and compliance.
  • Compile research and assessments of project effects and mitigation design into cultural resources reports and related documents.
  • Provide peer review for department and project documents.
  • Prepare Historic American Building Survey and Historic American Engineering Record documentation as part of project mitigation.
  • Assess the applicability of the federal and state preservation laws on property potentially impacted by transportation projects.
  • Prepare documentation to support Section 106 and Section 4(f) findings.
  • Coordinate applicability and findings with the State Historic Preservation Office.
  • Manage consultant activities, including preparing and/or reviewing scopes of work, monitoring progress, providing technical and project information, reviewing consultants' work, and approving payment authorizations.
  • Work is completed part time in an office setting with extensive use of a personal computer and part time outdoors on field work.
What we need:

A bachelor's degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation or closely related field plus at least two (2) years of full-time experience in research, writing or teaching in American architectural history or restoration architecture with an academic institution, historical organization or agency, museum or other professional institution

OR

A graduate degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, public history or closely related field with coursework in American architectural history

OR

A substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly
knowledge in the field of American architectural history.

What we’d like to see:
Note: You do not need to have all of these qualities to be
eligible for this position.  
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior professional qualification standards for architectural history.
  • Knowledge of Pacific Northwest history and architecture.
  • Experience and knowledge working with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation
  • Act of 1966 and Section 4(f) of the US Department of Transportation Act of 1966.
  • Professional level experience handling historic resources review and compliance work
  • Experience working in project teams with individuals or groups with differing or competing interests.
  • Experience related to transportation and geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Master’s degree in archaeology or cultural resources management.
