The Cultural Resource Survey Program (CRSP) of the New York State Museum in Albany, New York provides research and assessment of archaeological and architectural resources across the state. Our mission is to conduct cultural resource investigations and assist agencies with their State and Federal historic preservation mandates, and to further our knowledge of New York State’s past. Our field work includes archaeological and architectural surveys, archaeological site and property evaluations to determine eligibility for listing on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places, and archaeological data recovery excavations and historic building documentation.
The CRSP is seeking an entry level architectural historian for immediate work through the end of August, with a potential extension to December 31, 2021. Duties include assisting with architectural resource field surveys documenting and
photographing above-ground cultural resources, conducting site file searches,
completing historic resource inventory forms, and contributing to written
architectural survey reports. The typical work week is Monday through Friday, 37.5 hours per week.
Full Time Seasonal Hourly Position: $15-17 per hour
Requirements: Must be able to perform fieldwork requiring overnight travel. Office work will take place in our Albany office; travel expenses and per diem will be covered for fieldwork.
- Bachelor’s degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or related field (e.g., American History, Public History, Anthropology)
- Familiarity with architectural styles, materials, and structural terminology
- Familiarity with the National Register of Historic Places
- Valid driver’s license
- Prior experience in cultural resource survey and evaluation of historic architectural resources
- Strong writing skills
- Archaeological field school or experience
