The Archaeologist is a supervisory level position responsible for the administration and development of plans, policies, programs and local ordinances related to cultural resources. Additionally, the Archaeologist will be responsible for planning, programming, conducting investigations, and preparing reports related to identification, protection, and preservation of cultural resources for projects that are subject to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and the South Sacramento Habitat Conservation Plan (SSHCP).

Key responsibilities include:
  • Planning, programming, conducting investigations, and preparing reports related to identification, protection, and preservation of cultural resources.
  • Preparing and administering Programmatic Agreements (PAs) and Cultural Resources Management Plans (CRMP), consistent with requirements of various federal and state agencies and the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) in support of permitting activities under the South Sacramento Habitat Conservation Plan (SSHCP).
  • Providing advice, technical guidance and recommendations, and facilitating general coordination of cultural resource oriented work output.
  • Assisting the Office of Planning and Environmental Review (PER) in attaining Certified Local Government status for the County of Sacramento.
  • Assisting SSHCP partners in preparation of cultural resources reports and facilitating compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA.
  • Overseeing and preparing environmental documents for public and private projects consistent with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and the SSHCP.
  • Serving as the subject matter expert on all tribal matters.
  • Reviewing SSHCP environmental permitting applications and preparing other related documents.
  • Resolving routine customer inquiries and complaints regarding cultural resources.
  • Gathering and compiling information and illustrative materials on operations and activities for a variety of staff/project reports.
  • Composing correspondence and other documents to County staff, consultants, developers, other governmental agencies and the public.
  • Representing PER at inter-agency meetings, conferences and public hearings and working cooperatively with local, regional, state, and federal agencies.
Approximate Monthly Salary: $7,269.72 - $8,835.72
