DAHP and the Washington Trust Announce State Funding for Historic Barns and Cemeteries

Funding for two state grant programs is available for owners of historic barns and for those with stewardship responsibilities over historic cemeteries in Washington State.

This marks the eighth round of grant funding through the Heritage Barn Initiative. The Initiative established the Heritage Barn Register in 2007, a statewide list of historically significant barns, and owners of designated Heritage Barns are once again eligible to apply for matching grants available to assist with barn stabilization and rehabilitation projects. Now in its third round, the Historic Cemetery Preservation Program is intended to honor veterans and support the ongoing preservation of historic cemeteries through funding for capital projects. Approximately $1,000,000 is allocated to barns and $300,000 to cemeteries. Both initiatives are programs of the Washington State Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation (DAHP).

The deadline to submit applications for both grant programs is Sunday – October 17, 2021 at 11:59pm. Applications and more information for each program can be accessed online at:
The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation administers both grant programs for DAHP and will be hosting free online workshops during the application period for anyone wishing to learn more about both the Heritage Barn Preservation Initiative and the Historic Cemetery Preservation Program. The Washington Trust will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the process for completing application documents.
  • Barn Application Walkthrough – Monday, August 30 – 5pm-6pm
  • Cemetery Application Walkthrough – Tuesday, August 31– 5pm-6pm
  • “Office Hours” with Grant Administrators – Wednesday, Sept 8, Sept 22, and Oct 6 – 5-6pm
Please contact grants@preservewa.org for the Zoom meeting invite or look out for reminders on social media.
