Community Outreach Manager, Preservation Virginia (Richmond, VA)
Historic Preservation Blog from PreservationDirectory.com -
Contributed By: Jennifer Hurst-Wender
Website: http://preservationvirginia.org

Preservation Virginia: Our mission is to make Virginia’s communities and historic
places of memory stronger, more vital and economically sustainable through preservation, education and advocacy. Preservation Virginia has helped save more than 400 historic places by empowering communities and embracing the places of our past as vital to present and future generations. Our three areas of focus include preservation, education and advocacy.

Preservation: Our preservation initiatives include owning and maintaining 9 historic
properties. Through our ongoing partnerships, we are able to extend our efforts to protect and preserve historic places and communities in all regions of Virginia.

Education: Groups and individuals across the state depend on us as a resource for
relevant and timely information and guidance. Through the generosity of our supporters, we teach, share and collaborate for the preservation and enhancement of Virginia’s communities through our various educational programs.

Advocacy: Preserving history requires responsible solutions and an engaged public
that recognizes the value of our historic resources. As an advocate for Virginia’s historic resources, we work closely with decision-makers to communicate the economic and cultural benefits of preservation. We also encourage the continuation, strengthening and introduction of important preservation-related policies and programs.

Position Description:
Preservation Virginia is seeking an energetic self-starter to join a collaborative team to support individuals and groups intent on saving, preserving and sharing the undertold history of Virginia’s historic places. The Community Outreach Manager works internally and externally to advise on best practices in historic preservation and community-based preservation initiatives. The Community Outreach Manager supports efforts to increase inclusivity, broaden community audiences and engagement, and expand represented history. The position will support and expand a network of organizations, communities and individuals committed to preserving historic African American and Virginia Indian sites, as well as coordinate the exploration of partnership efforts in the Petersburg region to explore opportunities for case studies related to communities of underrepresented history, urban planning, economic policies and revitalization. The position will also coordinate and administer Preservation Virginia’s launching of an African American Fellows program.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will be an innovative thinker, results oriented and well
organized with a minimum of a four-year college or university with a degree in historic preservation, urban or rural planning or a similar field of study complementary to community revitalization. Strong writing and oral communication skills and a working knowledge of historic preservation practices are essential, as are two or more years of experience working on an architectural survey, an architectural restoration and preservation project or community preservation program.

Hours will vary depending on initiatives and may require after hours, evening and weekend work. Candidates must have a valid Virginia driver’s license and have access to their own vehicle as this position involves travel statewide.

Because of the nature of statewide preservation work, Preservation Virginia offers
flexible and hybrid work arrangements depending on the role and the employee.

Additional Considerations
  • Experience providing technical preservation or planning assistance to municipalities, community groups, and/or individuals.
  • Demonstrable experience interpreting and applying National Park Service guidance and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
  • Experience in outreach and public speaking, preparing and delivering public presentations.
  • Experience in writing and/or reviewing zoning, ordinances or preservation plans.
  • Demonstrate excellent ability working with a team of individuals and independently.
  • Demonstrate experience in determining the eligibility of resources for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

Position Type: Full-Time with benefits
Salary: $45,000-$50,000
