The Santa Monica Conservancy is a community based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting widespread understanding of the cultural, social, economic and environmental benefits of historic preservation. Founded in 2002, the Conservancy is a respected voice in the community with an impressive record of accomplishment. The Conservancy has an engaged and supportive Board of Directors, committee structure, and membership, and is poised to take on new and exciting challenges.

The ideal candidate will have achieved progressively responsible management positions. Professional experience and/or academic credentials in historic preservation, architecture or a related field is preferred.
The Conservancy has been a volunteer-run organization to-date, with day-to-day operations and longer term planning handled by Board and committee members. In recent years, part-time administrative staff has been engaged. The Executive Director will work with the Board to refine, prioritize, assign and share the following responsibilities, shaping the new position in a manner that will best serve the organization as it enters a period of intensive organization building.
During the pandemic, the work of the organization has been handled, in large part, remotely. In the longer term, presence in the Santa Monica community would be required.
With members of the Board and Development Committee, strengthens fund development, planning and implementing fundraising strategies.
- Partners with and guides the Development Committee to diversify and grow the base of support
- Identifies, and assists Board Members in approaching individual, corporate and foundation prospects for major gifts
- Develops donor recognition programs and ensures compliance with terms of grants and gifts
- Develops and implements strategies to increase membership and annual giving
- Develops grant proposals
- Assists Board Members in seeking sponsors for events and programs
- Ensures proper recognition of donors and compliance with grant requirements and donor expectations
Assists in annual and long-term planning and supports the efficiency and effectiveness of the Board and its committees.
- Encourages and supports development of a high-performing and successful Board of Directors
- Identifies and cultivates potential candidates for the Board of Directors
- Assists in development of annual and long term plans and objectives and in tracking progress toward their achievement
- Assists the Board President in developing meeting agendas and materials and attends Board meetings
- Provides support to committees of the Board, currently including Governance, Development, Advocacy, Finance and Program
- Participates in orientation of new Board Members
With members of the Board, manages Conservancy premises, staff, volunteers, records and resources.
- Creates a positive organizational culture and work place environment that celebrates diversity and achievement
- Engages and supervises employees and/or contractors
- Recruits and oversees docents and other volunteers
- Develops, documents and administers personnel and volunteer policies
- Assists the Board Treasurer in developing and monitoring the annual budget
- Maintains the organization’s administrative and financial records and ensures the effective application of technology
- Manages contracts and other agreements
- Assists in preparation of periodic audits
- Manages the staffing, condition and security of the Preservation Resource Center
With members of the Board and Program Committee, ensures the relevance, effectiveness, quality and sustainability of Conservancy programs.
- Evaluates, supports and updates ongoing programs
- Conceptualizes, prices and proposes new program initiatives for Board and donor support
- Renews effort to achieve a school-based historic preservation curriculum
- Ensures that current and potential programs make effective use of technology to extend audience/attendance
Advocacy and Public Relations:
With members of the Board and Advocacy Committee, represents the Conservancy before governmental officials and agencies, community organizations, other preservation organizations and the media to promote historic preservation and Conservancy initiatives.
- Covers meetings of the Landmarks Commission, City Council and other regulatory bodies
- Represents the Conservancy at community events
- Networks with preservation organizations regionally and with other community-serving organizations locally
- Handles media relations and oversees the effective use of on-line communication tools
The salary range is $75,000 to $100,000. Placement within range will be based on qualifications. Medical insurance will be provided.
