Preservation Associate, Newport Restoration Foundation (Newport, RI)

The Newport Restoration Foundation (NRF) is looking for a Preservation Associate to help the Preservation Department advance its current and future goals through property care, advocacy, education, research, and project management. This position will be based out of 51 Touro Street (Newport) and frequently visit the organization’s museums and preservation properties in Newport, Middletown, and Portsmouth. In addition to working closely with the Director of Preservation, the Preservation Associate will also collaborate with the Crew Foreman, Preservation Crew, and Property Manager on a regular basis as well as occasionally with third party consultants and contractors. For this position, NRF is seeking a candidate that is passionate about the field, self-motivated, and eager to contribute to a growing department.  

Responsibilities
:

Property Care

Document the preservation work of both the Preservation Crew and subcontractors.
   
Assist in implementing the recommendations of the Rough Point and Vernon House Historic Structures Reports.
        
Track and update condition assessments for the preservation properties.
    
Subcontract small preservation-related capital projects, such as masonry repairs.

Advocacy and Education

Assist with monitoring of advocacy issues, attending related municipal meetings, conducting research in order to inform NRF’s position(s), and drafting opinion letters.
 
Regularly produce preservation content for NRF’s social media accounts, newsletters, and other platforms, in collaboration with the Marketing & Communications Manager.
    
Respond to preservation inquiries from homeowners, researchers, and general public.
  
Assist with the management of NRF’s trades training program.

Keeping History Above Water (KHAW)
         
Assist in the management of KHAW conferences, including attending host city meetings.
   
Produce and manage content for the KHAW webpage, working in collaboration with the Marketing & Communications Manager.

Assist in developing and managing efforts to expand the impact of NRF’s KHAW initiative such as grant-funded projects, networking, and programming.

Project Management 

Take the lead on discrete preservation projects as assigned by the Director of
Preservation, such as condition assessments at the Whitehorne House Museum and
Sherman Windmill and disaster planning for the preservation properties.

Research
     
Perform research as needed to inform preservation decisions, write and expand National Register nominations, and develop educational content.

The Preservation Associate will also be responsible for other duties as assigned by the Executive Director and Director of Preservation.

Qualifications:
    
Master’s degree in historic preservation, architectural history, or closely-related
field.
       
Working knowledge of historic construction methods, building pathologies, and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

Ability to read and understand basic architectural drawings.
        
Basic knowledge of local, state, and federal preservation policies and regulations.
    
Experience with historical and architectural research.
        
Experience with basic architectural documentation (e.g., photographs, sketches, etc.).

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, along with a proclivity for
technology that lends itself to learning new software as needed.
   
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    
Strong interpersonal skills with internal and external contacts.
 
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
      
Detail oriented with excellent organizational and project management skills.
  
Creative, professional, and curious and independent learner.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and vehicle.
