Length: Term of positions is 20 weeks; full-time 40 hrs./wk. 
Location: Larned, Kansas 
Living Allowance: $550 /week 
AmeriCorps Award: Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $2,417.14 (pre-tax).  
Start Date: 04/24/2022

Title of Position: Traditional Trade Apprentice 


Position Details:

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.  

SIPP in partnership with the National Park Service Fort Larned National Historic Site are seeking an AmeriCorps member who will serve as an apprentice on the park historic preservation team. Apprentices will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides apprentices with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector. 


Position Responsibilities will include:  
  • Participate in park safety program 
  • Perform preservation maintenance and treatment repairs on ten historic structures in the park in a variety of trade skills 
  • Develop skills in masonry pointing, flat wall plastering, wood repairs to windows and doors, glazing, wood shingle roof repairs and painting 


Minimum Requirements:   
  • Strong work ethic 
  • Physical stamina to perform work 
  • Willingness to learn 
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and use 
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions 
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent 
  • Valid State Driver license 
  • Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214 
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before starting 


Preferred Qualifications:  
  • Carpentry, Masonry or other trade knowledge and skills 
  • A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation 
  • Is comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions and at heights 
  • Have a willingness to work hard and get dirty 
  • Have a serious attitude toward safety all day, every day 
  • Have the ability to think critically and creatively 
  • Have positive attitude 
  • Have ability to communicate effectively 
  • Have a professional and respectful manner and works well within a team 
  • Ability to commit to a four-month experience of combined training and hands-on work 
  • Flexibility to work outside of traditional hours may be required 
  • Have the desire and ability to complete all program training requirements in order to receive NCCER and OSHA certifications including assessments and all classroom and online coursework.

  • Living Allowance: $550/week (pre-tax) 
  • Core curriculum through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), an industry leading certification program for maintenance and craft professionals. 
  • OSHA-10 Safety Training 
  • Historic Preservation Fundamentals Training 
  • Participants who complete the program will receive Public Land Corps status for two years that can be used for securing employment with the federal government.
