Length: Term of positions is 20 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk 
Location: This position will take place at the Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine and Hampton National Historic Site, Baltimore, MD 
Living Allowance: $550 /week 
AmeriCorps Award: Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $2,417.14 (pre-tax).

Title of Position: Traditional Trades Apprentice – Fort McHenry NM & NS 


Position Details 

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. 

SIPP in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Apprenticeship Program. Participants will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

Fort McHenry National Monument and Hampton National Historic Site are parks within the National Park Service. They have $12 million dollars of deferred maintenance. Projects needs are for carpentry, painting, masonry, electrical and plumbing. The participant will learn a lot about building trades on historic structures and will help us keep our historic and cultural landscape in functional condition. 

The TTAP participant will work alongside the Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine’s, Exhibit Specialist, and their Preservationist to repair, replace and paint wood elements on historic buildings. These elements include doors, siding, fascia, window sashes, and windowsills. The participant will help to glaze windows. They will work on raking and repointing brick walls and stone structures. They will assist in the stabilization of cemetery headstones. 


Position Responsibilities will include:  
  • Masonry, carpentry, Mechanical techniques to preserve at-risk components of the historic built environment. 
  • This includes preserving historic homes, garages, sheds, grounds and other structures. 
  • Carpentry skills learned may include simple timber-framing, roofing, design, and layout. 
  • Masonry skills learned may include stone repair, pointing, brick laying, and headstone stabilization. 
  • Mechanical skills learned may include HVAC, electric, and lift trainings. 
  • Completing general/routine maintenance tasks. 

Minimum Requirements:  
  • Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including occasional lifting or handling of objects over 50lbs using proper techniques. 
  • Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces. 
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold. 
  • Must be able to provide own transportation to Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine 
  • Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214 
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before starting 

Preferred Qualifications:  
  • A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation 
  • Is comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions and at heights 
  • Have a willingness to work hard and get dirty 
  • Have a serious attitude toward safety all day, every day 
  • Have the ability to think critically and creatively 
  • Have positive attitude 
  • Have ability to communicate effectively 
  • Have a professional and respectful manner and works well within a team 
  • Ability to commit to a four-month experience of combined training and hands-on work 
  • Flexibility to work outside of traditional hours may be required 
  • Have the desire and ability to complete all program training requirements in order to receive NCCER and OSHA certifications including assessments and all classroom and online coursework.

  • Core curriculum through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), an industry leading certification program for maintenance and craft professionals. 
  • OSHA-10 Safety Training 
  • Waste Management Training 
  • Genie Lift Training 
  • Historic Preservation Fundamentals Training 
  • Participants who complete the program will receive Public Land Corps status for two years that can be used for securing employment with the federal government.
