Length: Term of positions is 20 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk 
Location: This posting is specifically for Manassas National Battlefield Park in Manassas, VA. Preference given to local applicants. Housing may be available. 
AmeriCorps Education Award: This position is eligible for an AmeriCorps Segal Education Award after successful completion of this program. Value of Award equals $2,417.14 
Living Allowance: $550/week, 40hr/week 
Start Date: 04/18/2022

Title of Position: Traditional Trades Apprentice – Manassas National Battlefield Park 


Position Details 

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. 

SIPP in partnership with the National Park Service are seeking an intern who will complete maintenance repairs and preservation to ensure longevity of historic assets associated with Manassas National Battlefield Park. The incumbent will participate in numerous historic preservation projects including monuments and historic building structures within the Battlefield Park. The incumbent will learn how to perform different skills of historic trades such as carpentry, masonry, and stonework to help retain and preserve the historic character of the Manassas National Battlefield Park. 

This program provides young adults and Post 9/11 Veterans hands-on skills training?from NPS professionals, focusing on?the maintenance and care of monuments,?memorials, and structures?in the National Park Service system.?Apprentices will receive introductory training in a variety?of?traditional trades and will?develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship?while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides?apprentices with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

There are two components to the?Traditional?Trades Apprenticeship Program: an initial training period and an extended?project period. For the first two to three weeks, NPS professionals teach apprentices safety techniques, preservation philosophy, and technical trades skills.??During this training, apprentices complete core curriculum through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), an industry leading certification program for maintenance and craft professionals. This training?is being offered online due to the current pandemic.  


Position Responsibilities will include: 
  • Monument restoration and preservation. 
  • Historic structure interior and exterior preservation. 
  • Stonework throughout the grounds. 
  • Operate vehicles and machinery in a safe and efficient manner. 

Minimum Requirements:  
  • Completion of High School Diploma 
  • Able to lift 50 lbs in a safe manner. 
  • Work in adverse weather conditions including extreme heat or cold. 
  • Work at heights and operate telescopic lifts 
  • Able to follow oral and written instruction. 
  • Communicate and work effectively in a team setting. 
  • Obtain a valid state Driver’s License. 
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screening. 
  • Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214 
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before starting 

Preferred Qualifications:  
  • A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation 
  • Is comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions and at heights 
  • Have a willingness to work hard and get dirty 
  • Have a serious attitude toward safety all day, every day 
  • Have the ability to think critically and creatively 
  • Have positive attitude 
  • Have ability to communicate effectively 
  • Have a professional and respectful manner and works well within a team 
  • Ability to commit to a four-month experience of combined training and hands-on work 
  • Flexibility to work outside of traditional hours may be required 
  • Have the desire and ability to complete all program training requirements in order to receive NCCER and OSHA certifications including assessments and all classroom and online coursework. 

Benefits: 
  • Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $2,417.14 (pre-tax). 
  • Living Allowance: $550/week (pre-tax) 
  • Participants who complete the program will receive Public Land Corps status for two years that can be used for securing employment with the federal government. 
  • Opportunity to learn trade secrets from master craftsmen 
  • Government Vehicle Training
