Length: Term of positions is 20 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk 
Location: This posting is specifically for Springfield Armory National Historic Site, Springfield, MA. Preference given to local applicants.  
AmeriCorps Education Award: This position is eligible for an AmeriCorps Segal Education Award after successful completion of this program. Value of Award equals $2,417.14 
Living Allowance: $550/week, 40hr/week 
Start Date: 06/22/2022

Title of Position: Traditional Trades Apprentice, HVAC and Landscape – Springfield Armory NHS 

Position Details 

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. 

SIPP in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Apprenticeship Program. This program provides young adults and post-9/11 military service veterans hands-on skills training from NPS professionals, focusing on the maintenance and care of monuments, memorials, and structures in the National Park Service system. Apprentices will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides apprentices with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector. 

Springfield Armory National Historic Site is situated on the campus of the Springfield Technical Community College (STCC). STCC has a trades program for HVAC and for Landscape Maintenance. We believe in working in partnership to benefit the Armory in whole while fulfilling the mission of both institutions while serving our communities and benefiting from their skills.

Position Responsibilities will include: 
  • Interns will assist with the rehabilitation of the historic Springfield Armory grounds 
  • Interns will replace trees and plant new shrubbery in select locations throughout the site. 
  • Interns will assist with bucking and disposal of downed trees and thatch around the site. 
  • Interns will assist a trained qualified arborist with tree care, however, will not be authorized to utilize a chain saw, per NPS Chainsaw Guidelines. 
  • Interns will assist with the repair and rehabilitation of various HVAC systems and minor electrical systems throughout the historic facility. 
  • Interns will practice utilizing electrical meters, minor electrical hand tools, HVAC pressure gauges and related tools. 
  • Interns will assist with performing general preventive maintenance on mechanical systems around the site. 
  • Interns will assist trained staff in working on a variety of mechanical systems such as boilers, air handling units, condenser units, pumps and the historical clock.

Minimum Requirements: 
  • Applicant must have basic knowledge and ability to work around and with a variety of commercial mechanical and electrical systems 
  • It is essential that applicants have strong communication skills (written and oral), strong work ethic and the ability to work independently. 
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold. 
  • U.S. Citizen able to pass a federal background check 
  • Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214 
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before starting 

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation 
  • Is comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions and at heights 
  • Have a willingness to work hard and get dirty 
  • Have a serious attitude toward safety all day, every day 
  • Have the ability to think critically and creatively 
  • Have positive attitude 
  • Have ability to communicate effectively 
  • Have a professional and respectful manner and works well within a team 
  • Ability to commit to a six-month experience of combined training and hands-on work 
  • Flexibility to work outside of traditional hours may be required 
  • Have the desire and ability to complete all program training requirements in order to receive NCCER and OSHA certifications including assessments and all classroom and online coursework.

  • Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $2,417.14 (pre-tax). 
  • Living Allowance: $550/week (pre-tax) 
  • Core curriculum through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), an industry leading certification program for maintenance and craft professionals. 
  • OSHA-10 Safety Training 
  • Historic Preservation Fundamentals Training 
  • Participants who complete the program will receive Public Land Corps status for two years that can be used for securing employment with the federal government.
