African American Burial Grounds Preservation Act Introduced in Senate

From Preservation Action:

This week, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) introduced the African American Burial Grounds Preservation Act (S. 3667) in the Senate. The legislation would authorize the National Park Service to establish a $3 million grant program, in coordination with governmental, private, and non-profit partners, to aid efforts across the country to identify, document, preserve, research, and interpret historic African American burial grounds.

The protection and documentation of African American burial grounds have long been neglected. Many African American burial grounds are in a state of disrepair, inaccessible, or their locations are unknown. Providing federal resources helps ensure that these sites are preserved, documented, and maintained for future generations.

“As a nation, we have not invested the necessary resources to preserve these hallowed grounds. That’s why we’ve worked with the community, and with civil rights, veterans, and historic preservation groups to introduce bipartisan legislation to preserve historic Black burial grounds around the country,” Sen. Brown said.

The African American Burial Grounds Preservation Act has been referred to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Companion legislation is expected to be introduced in the House next week. Preservation Action fully supports this important legislation and urges quick passage.
