SCA Crew Leader: NPS/HPTC Historic Preservation Project Series: Charles Pinckney NHS & George Washington Birthplace NM

Position Dates: Jan 3 - July 21, 2023
Location (City and State): Charleston, SC & Colonial Beach, VA

Primary Responsibilities:
The Crew Leader will be working in collaboration with SCA Historic Preservation staff and NPS/HPTC staff to coordinate historic preservation projects at Charles Pinckney National Historical Site and George Washington Birthplace National Monument. The project will include building a barn wall, siding repair and replacement, installing windows, shutter repair and replacement, and cedar shake roof replacement. Full draft project plans can be provided upon request.

Specifically, the Crew Leader will:
-Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics
-Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical preservation trade skills, mentoring personal and professional development
-Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA
-Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff


Leader Qualifications:
-Experience working with youth or young adults
-At least 1 year of preservation trades experience such as window restoration, carpentry, preservation maintenance, etc.
-Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
-OSHA 10 or 30 and Lead Safe Renovator Supervisor certifications preferred
-Must be able to attend Crew Leader training: Mid-December 2022, TBD
-Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
-Must have the ability to legally work in the US
-Must have a valid drivers license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards
-Must be able to meet SCAs criminal background check standards
-Housing is provided and shared with crew members. Leaders will be provided a private room.

Leader Benefits and Compensation:
-$800 weekly stipend
-$1000 travel stipend
-Housing provided. Leader will have a private room and Wi-Fi.
-Leaders will receive training on all required SCA systems, First Aid, OSHA 10, Lead Safe Awareness, and on-the-job training from NPS and HPTC preservation professionals in all necessary skills for the project.

Conditions of Employment
Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA volunteer program participants are required to provide proof of up to date vaccination against COVID-19. Per CDC guidance, up to date vaccination now includes all recommended COVID-19 vaccines, including any booster dose(s) when indicated. For example, if someone has completed the primary series but is not yet indicated for a booster shot, they are considered up to date. Once a person is indicated for a booster (6 months after Pfizer or Moderna primary series, 2 months after J&J primary series), full and up-to-date vaccination includes the completed booster shot.
