Summary of Position: Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Education Programs Director is responsible for the design, organization, and implementation of all educational services for the California Preservation Foundation. This position includes developing the annual education program schedule and curriculum with the Education Committee Chair and Committee; managing the annual Preservation Design Awards Program; providing leadership and management of the annual California Preservation Conference programs. This position requires a high level of autonomy, initiative and ability to work with a range of players in the statewide preservation community.

Duties:

  • Assess local preservation needs, coordinate alliances, develop partnerships, and create programs to meet the training needs of our constituents.
  • Know local, state and federal preservation laws, the role of relevant government agencies and the roles of local and national non-profits to develop partnerships in creating programs.
  • Know current best practices in architectural conservation, preservation planning, and development of local ordinances.
  • Work closely with the CPF's Executive Director and the Education Committee to develop the annual education program, including workshops and the programs of the Annual California Preservation Conference.
  • Manage all content development for the annual workshop program bringing information and technical assistance to communities throughout California.
  • Maintain ongoing relationships with local preservation groups, city and state agencies and other groups that will participate in developing and presenting at workshops and annual conference.
  • Collaborate with staff and board in the creation of the CPF quarterly newsletter, semimonthly e-blasts, blog, other publications and expansion of the CPF website to provide information and resources to the public.
  • Provide Staff support to CPF's Education Committee, its Subcommittees and Advocacy Committee, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years experience working in the historic preservation, planning, community organizing, or a related field. Non-profit experience is a plus.
  • A strong working knowledge of the preservation network in California, as well as knowledge of planning, local and state regulations governing preservation issues.
  • Bachelor's degree in historic preservation or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Computer proficiency is required.
  • Excellent writing, editing, research and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good oral communication skills, and comfort with public speaking.
  • Job requires travel, attendance at board meetings, workshops, the Preservation Design Awards and the annual preservation conference. A valid Class C California Driver's License is required.
