Overview of Job:

The position of African American Programs Coordinator serves as  Historic Preservation Division’s liaison to the Georgia African American Historic Preservation Network (GAAHPN). The coordinator assists communities in identifying and planning for the preservation, maintenance, and interpretation of African American historic sites and properties. The position develops outreach programs and strategies to highlight African American heritage in Georgia, including strategies to initiate, promote, and increase community engagement. The coordinator manages major projects, including the Rosenwald school, equalization school, and Civil Rights site research and identification initiatives. The position coordinates the production of the Reflections quarterly newsletter. The coordinator develops and implements educational programs and special events, including lectures, classroom, engagements, and community and public meetings. The position acts as liaison between neighborhood groups, city officials, and HPD. The coordinator advises HPD on African American issues and projects and supports other HPD program areas as necessary. The position supports and participates in special projects as necessary.


Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in history, architecture, historic preservation, African American Studies, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university AND One year of experience in a directly related field OR two years of experience required at the lower-level Curator/Preservationist 2 (NRP031) or position equivalent


Preferred Qualifications:

Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following qualifications:
• Completion of a master’s degree in Historic Preservation, Planning, Architectural History, History, American Studies, African American Studies, or closely related field.
• Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity with African American heritage and historic resources.
• Experience creating or coordinating African American heritage programs.
• Experience preparing preservation plans and relaying technical preservation information.
• Experience developing community outreach initiatives while engaging and educating the public, community groups, and local officials.
• Experience forming and facilitating partnerships between community, municipal, and non-profit organizations.
• Experience working with a core SHPO program areas such as Tax Incentives, National Register, Certified Local Governments, or Environmental Review on a consultant basis or as state/local agency staff.
