Lecture: Wilmette's Friendly Town Program

November 10, 2024 |
Join us at the
Museum from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. to welcome Dr. Mary Barr, author of Friends Disappear: The Battle for
Racial Equality in Evanston, to speak on Wilmette’s Friendly Town Program
and contextualize local participation in the 1960s civil rights movement.
To help pave the
way for residential integration during the 1960s, organizers introduced race
relations projects like Chicago’s Friendly Town Program, which arranged for
inner-city kids to spend two weeks each summer with suburban host families.
