Revolutionary Germantown Festival

October 4, 2008
Revolutionary Germantown Festival
The battle for freedom will be fought in Historic Germantown: Freedom's Backyard on Saturday, October 4. Spend the day with family and friends at the Revolutionary Germantown Festival featuring two Battle of Germantown reenactments taking place at Cliveden of the National Trust at noon and 3:00 p.m.

Cliveden, located at 6401 Germantown Avenue, was the site of the Battle of Germantown, and has sponsored the battle reenactments for more than 30 years. Germantown is the only location in Philadelphia where a battle was fought during the Revolutionary War, literally in the backyards of residents. The Festival will feature two battle reenactments, complete with soldiers in period uniforms staging General George Washington's attack on the British soldiers, attempting to liberate Philadelphia on October 4, 1777.

The Generals' Dog Exchange will take place at 4:00 p.m., following the battle reenactment. After the Battle of Germantown took place, General George Washington came across a dog wearing an inscribed collar marking him as the property of British General William-Howe, the man who had just defeated him in battle. Washington did the proper thing and returned the dog to his adversary.

Visitors can enjoy even more activities at the Revolutionary Germantown Festival from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. At Upsala, located across the street from Cliveden on Germantown Avenue, guests can meet Ned Hector, an African American teamster who participated in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown, and Dinah, a former slave who famously saved Stenton from burning by the British. Nearby, visitors can attend the I'll Take no Tea performance by Tucker's Tales Puppet Theater. The performance is a look at the Tea Party craze of 1773-74 complete with live music and historical costumes and will take place from 1:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. Guests can also take a student guided walking tour through Historic Germantown, beginning at Upsala and taking you through Concord School, the Johnson House, Wyck and more.

The Concord Schoolhouse and Upper Burying Ground (6309 Germantown Avenue) will feature a ceremony for fallen soldiers from 2:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. The grounds were the scene of intense fighting during the Battle of Germantown, and contain the graves of 31 American soldiers who died in the fight; many of them buried that afternoon by local teenage boys. Across the street from the Schoolhouse, Johnson House (6306 Germantown Avenue) will have refreshments available for purchase at an all day fish fry. Just a five minute walk from Johnson House, festival visitors can bring a picnic lunch to the gardens and grounds of Wyck (6026 Germantown Avenue), and learn more about the lives of the Quaker family that owned the property for more than 80 years.

For additional festival activities, visitors can travel one mile south to Historic RittenhouseTown (206 Lincoln Drive), site of North America's first papermill. Historic RittenhouseTown will feature papermaking and open hearth cooking demonstrations throughout the day.

All activities at the Revolutionary Germantown Festival are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.. For $10, visitors can also purchase a Festival Passport that is valid for one-time admission to each of the participating historic sites in Freedom's Backyard for one full year. Participating attractions include Cliveden/Upsala, Concord School, Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion, Grumblethorpe, Historic RittenhouseTown, Johnson House, Stenton and Wyck.
