South Campus Churches Walking Tour
November 8, 2008 |
Walking Tour led by Susan Cerny Berkeley Historical Society
*South of Campus Churches* - November 8, led by Susan Cerny 10 AM to Noon. Members $8; Non-members $10. BHS members season pass $30. For reservations and starting point, call (510) 848-0181.
After the University moved to the Berkeley campus in 1873, a residential and commercial neighborhood slowly developed south of the campus. Churches, seminaries and student church organizations were an early component and many remain today. These are active, important institutions, serving the social and spiritual needs of greater Berkeley. Our walk will look at churches that have survived despite changing demographics, redevelopment, and the effects of eminent Domain and vagaries of time. We will observe remnants (houses, schools and other institutions) of the original family-oriented residential neighborhood and visit the interiors of many churches. The tour ends with a snack at the McCreary Greer House at 2318 Durant Avenue. |
