Everyone Has a Story: This is the Story Tonight with Dr. Elaine Douglas, M.D.

May 28, 2025 |
Montclair History Center and Aging in Montclair have teamed up to present two live interview events where longtime residents share their stories and the impact they've had on the Montclair community. This event is free and made possible by Partners for Health Foundation. This event is offered in person or through zoom. Registration required in advance.
Dr. Elaine Douglas, M.D. will share the legacy of her family’s long-time presence in Montclair since the late 19th century. Her family achieved many firsts academically and professionally. Her father, Dr. Fred Douglas, was the first Black physician to become a full attending at Montclair’s three hospitals: Mountainside, St. Vincent’s, and Montclair Community. Her mother, Daisy Douglas, was one of the first Black teachers hired by the Montclair Public Schools. Daisy started her teaching career at Glenfield School, which was a junior high at the time. Daisy went on to become the head of the Home Economics Department at Montclair High School. Dr. Elaine Doulgas was inspired by both of her parents. In her first career, she taught music in elementary schools for several years. She ultimately sought a career in medicine, following in her father’s footsteps and became the first Black female to be promoted to full attending physician at Mountainside Hospital. Like her father, medicine proved to be her true calling.
