Spring Garden Workshop at Old Economy Village
April 4, 2009 |
Dean Norton, Director of Horticulture for Mt. Vernon is the keynote speaker for this year’s Old Economy Village Spring Garden Workshop. Mr. Norton has extensively studied 18th century gardens and gardening practices. Of particular interest to him is the way George Washington incorporated those ideas into the landscape plan of his estate. However, Mr. Norton applies modern science and management techniques to maintain the historical accuracy of the gardens and grounds. His presentation provides an entertaining and informative look at landscape design and horticulture in George Washington’s world. Charlotte (Chuck) Tancin, Librarian of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation at Carnegie Mellon University will discuss the Hunt’s world-renowned collection of rare botanical artwork, books, and manuscripts and how those collections help unravel the history of horticulture and gardens through the ages. In addition there will be hands-on activities, how-to sessions, a garden market and tours of Old Economy Village’s gardens. This is a popular workshop and space is limited. Pre-registration and prepayment is needed by Friday, March 27th. Call (724) 266 - 4500, ext. 101 for more information. The Garden Workshop qualifies as update training for Master Gardeners. During the workshop, participants will have an opportunity to practice traditional gardening techniques and tour Old Economy Village’s historic gardens. At the Garden Mart an assortment of plants and ornamental garden gifts will be available for purchase. Call (724) 266 - 4500 ext. 101 to register. |
