City of the Seekers: L.A.'s Unique Spiritual Legacy
March 14, 2009 |
A truly unique event! On the Los Angeles Conservancy’s “City of the Seekers” tour, discover five historic sites related to spiritual organizations that took root in Los Angeles in the early part of the twentieth century.
Los Angeles is home to a number of religious sites and organizations, many of which are deeply woven into the city’s history. “City of the Seekers” will celebrate this unique identity and the architecture that embodies it.
This special one-time-only self-driving tour offers a rare chance to explore historic religious sites not typically open to the general public. Sites include: Angelus Temple, Echo Park; Self Realization Fellowship Mother Center, atop Mount Washington; Chapel of the Jesus Ethic, Glendale; Philosophical Research Society, Los Feliz; and the Bonnie Brae House, Historic Filipinotown.
Tickets are $30, $25 for Conservancy members, and $10 for kids twelve and under. For tickets, visit laconservancy.org. Tour-goers will drive to each site where they will receive a docent led tour. There will be a series of related “City of the Seekers” events in March including the art exhibit Within Heaven’s Earshot: Religious Album Covers beginning March 13. The lecture A Visionary State: California’s Spiritual Legacy on March 15 and the multi-media show Mystic Los Angeles on March 17, both feature the work of Erik Davis.
