Portland's Cast-Iron Building Heritage: Skidmore - Old Town
May 16, 2009 |
Skidmore - Old Town is where the city of Portland began. Designated a National Landmark Historic District in 1977 (the highest level of national heritage recognition) it is the only such district in the city of Portland. Skidmore - Old Town boasts a rich variety of historic buildings, and efforts to celebrate, promote, and preserve them deserve wide and continuing support. If you're not already a member, there's no better time to join the AHC and get a rare opportunity to hear architect, author and cast-iron expert Bill Hawkins share the history of Skidmore - Old Town, Portland's cast-iron architecture and the struggle to save it from the wrecking ball.
