Lessons Learned from Preservation Battles
July 28, 2009 |
A number of historic buildings have been saved and lost over the past decade, and all of them started with one thing in common – a single person or a small group of people tried to organize an effort to save a building. The end result was a success or a failure – with lots of variation in between. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to know what worked, or didn’t, or might have…if only. “Lessons Learned” will bring together a select group of experienced grass-roots advocates who will share their strategies and after-the-fact perspectives, so we can apply those lessons in our ongoing or forthcoming preservation crises – and be more effective at achieving the preservation successes we strive for.
Among the “battle-veterans” (one might describe them) to be featured in a panel presentation are: Peter Meijer - an architect who worked on the Shriners Hospital (ultimately lost); Dean Gisvold and Dean Smith – who helped prevent construction of the precedent-setting Irvington Squire condo project in the Irvington Conservation District; Val Ballestrem – who learned the land-use ropes on the “Clay Rabbit” House on SE Division (which was moved) prior to working at the AHC; a representative from the group that went up against PGE and saved three historic Sunnyside houses from a planned substation expansion.
