Green Building and the Historic House

August 1, 2009

“Green” building and residential rehab projects are everywhere these days. But, what exactly does it mean to be “Green”? Is this just another advertising blitz? Is the green building movement a fad? In reality, there is a history to green buildings, one that dates back to the pre-electric age in the form of passive building practices and the use of particular historic building materials.

Wade Freitag, owner of Craftsman Design and Renovation, specializes in the renovation of older residential homes and believes we should look past the hype and embrace the green building movement from the historical perspective along with modern technological advancements. Wade will explain how green building encompasses the entire design and building process – from preservation of existing buildings and materials, to an emphasis on quality craftsmanship, and the use of environmentally friendly and sustainable new building materials.
