The History Channel films at Fort Mifflin

February 7-8, 2007
The History Channel films at Fort Mifflin
Filming for an episode of the new History Channel series, "Ancient Marvels - Cities of the Underworld," a production crew arrived at Fort Mifflin to film the discovery of the four hidden rooms that had been mysteriously buried over 125 years ago.  The rooms have multiple era construction from the 1840's to as late as the original construction of the Fort in 1771.  As you will see in the episode (broadcast date TBD) one the of the highlights will be the doors to a temporary jail cell with a Maple door in perfect condition.  The room held one of Fort Mifflin's most infamous individuals, William H. Howe, a Union soldier that was kept in the cell at Fort Mifflin until his execution by hanging for desertion and murder.  Howe wrote his name on one of the whitewashed brick archways and is perfectly legible today.  Along with other graffiti associated with him and his guards from April to August 1863.  Several artifacts were found were they were left when the rooms were buried, like a tin plate and cup, several bottles and other artifacts.   For some reason still unknown to us, the Army then covered the entire set of rooms in the late 1860's and made no note of them again.  It is the reason we were unaware that they existed.
