Daniel Burnham: Architect, Planner, Leader Tour

August 9 - October 16, 2009

New for the 2009 season! The career of Chicago architect Daniel Burnham covered an era in which architecture evolved from small buildings with load-bearing walls to soaring steel-frame skyscrapers; it spanned a period when Chicago was the fastest growing city in the world to a time when it became clear the city needed a plan to manage its unplanned growth. This walking tour of the Loop includes stops at some of Burnham’s best-known landmarks as well as a few lesser-known buildings. Along the way, learn about the life of the man behind the 1909 Plan: his partnership with John Wellborn Root, his work with Charles Atwood, Ernest Graham and others, and the impact of the 1893 World’s Fair on his work and life. This tour explores all of the facets of Burnham’s career and his legacy – as an architect, as a planner, and a leader in the city he cared about most, Chicago. See website (www.architecture.org) for dates, times, and pricing.
