It Takes a Village: New Historic Theatre Forum

It Takes a Village: New Historic Theatre Forum

The League of Historic American Theatres presents . . .

IT TAKES A VILLAGE

A New Historic Theatre Forum Focusing On Community & Cultural Development

October 18-20, 2009
Hosted by PROCTORS
Schenectady, NY

The League is pleased to present a day-and-a-half forum using the experiences of Proctors and Schenectady, New York as a lens for investigating the complicated and interconnected work of community and cultural development.   Schenectady was once a company town, where General Electric was the employer.  But, when manufacturing moved south, then abroad, Schenectady declined, then reached rock bottom about a dozen years ago.

Located in an otherwise stable region and blessed with a partially restored, fairly busy, but never modernized old vaudeville theatre — Proctors — community leaders imagined a redevelopment effort using aggressive expansion plans for the theatre as the core element to revitalize the central business district.  Proctors is now a multi-theatre, community performing arts center open year-round offering a wide range of programming and community uses.

Proctors $42 million investment leveraged over $150 million of other private and public expenditures.  And the effort was community-wide . . . public planning, meeting and investment . . . private investment . . . tough timetables . . . establishing spaces for artists and commerce.

Join us to celebrate a great success story, learn from Proctors and advise them as they continue on the path of cultural and community renewal.
