China's Architectural Boom: Opportunities & Challenges

March 7, 2007

China’s Architectural Boom—Opportunities & Challenges with Wen Zhao, AIA, Associate Partner, Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects LLP

China is poised to be a testing ground for the world’s most innovative designers and engineers. The booming design and construction market provides tremendous opportunities as well as many challenges.

Wen Zhao, AIA, an Associate Partner with Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects LLP in Portland, will share his experiences with identifying and developing worthwhile projects in China. Wen has 19 years experiences as an architect, including 7 years working in China prior to his coming to the U.S. His current China projects include 2 mixed-used and 2 health care projects in Beijing and Dalian.

Areas he will discuss include: understanding the meaning of the project’s scope; collaborating in the execution of the design concept; understanding and managing the flow of communication in a unique cultural context; and dealing with the competition and getting paid.

Zhao has a B.A. in Architecture from the Chongqing Institute of Architectural and Engineering in China and a M.A. in Architecture from the University of Minnesota.
