English Heritage National Conference on Commemorative Plaques
February 18-19, 2010 |
Places are now available for a national two-day conference on commemorative plaques being held at the Royal Institute of British Architects on February 18-19 2010 - an essential diary date for those considering putting up plaques. Conference participants will also be directly involved with shaping the direction of future nationwide guidance on commemorative plaques. Hosted by English Heritage, which runs London’s blue plaques scheme, founded in 1866, the conference includes talks from representatives of local authorities, societies and other organisations involved in running schemes in Manchester, Bath, Coventry, Newcastle, Brighton, London, Liverpool, Leeds and Norwich. Discussion sessions and workshops cover practical topics ranging from plaque design and inscription, selection criteria and historical research, to the gaining of consents and the promotion of plaques and plaque schemes. The conference, Celebrating People and Place, highlights the role of plaques throughout the country in connecting past and present and in marking buildings with historical associations, helping to preserve them for the future. Conference outcomes and input from attendees will feed directly into a series of guidance documents being launched by English Heritage in Spring 2010, covering all aspects of plaques work. Speakers range from members of the English Heritage Blue Plaques Panel – including its Chairman Professor Sir David Cannadine – to Michael Loveday, Chief Executive of the Heritage Economic & Regeneration Trust and Dr Kevin Grady, Director of Leeds Civic Trust. Professor Cannadine said: ”This event will inspire and inform anyone involved with commemorative plaques and offers a unique platform to meet and share ideas.” Other speakers include: - Emily Cole, Head of the English Heritage Blue Plaques Team and editor of Lived in London - Marion Barter, Director of the Architectural History Practice and Amanda Wallace, Head of Asset Management and Developments at Manchester City Galleries - Mark Lloyd, Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club, Gloucestershire - Harbinder Singh, Honorary Director of the Anglo Sikh Heritage Trail - David McLaughlin, Conservation Architect, McLaughlin Ross llp - Wendy Morgan, Principal Conservation Officer at Liverpool City Council Panellists include: - Liz Brand, Visit Brighton - Ian Ayris, Newcastle City Council - George Demidowicz, Coventry City Council - Reuben Kench, Stockton on Tees Borough Council - Anya Whitehead, Southwark Council - S.I Martin, author and historian - Geoff Noble, Urban Practitioners The conference also includes the opportunity to take guided walks around some of the plaques of Marylebone, Fitzrovia or Regent’s Park.
