2006 International Preservation Trades Workshop

October 26-28, 2006
2006 International Preservation Trades Workshop
October 26-28th, 2006 the Preservation Trades Network (PTN) will hold the 10th annual International Preservation Trades Workshop (IPTW) in the Holy Cross Neighborhood of New Orleans, as part of an ongoing effort to help "Rebuild Community Heritage" in historic neighborhoods that are still working to recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina. The Preservation Trades Network and World Monuments Fund (WMF) are also working with the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association and other local partners to offer ongoing direct, practical "hands on" assistance and technical preservation resources to help neighborhood residents and property owners repair their historic structures and return to their communities.

Volunteers including historical architects and preservation specialists in carpentry, plastering, roofing, masonry, condition assessments and interpretation of preservation guidelines are needed now, and in the coming months, to help staff a Mobile Preservation Unit (MPU) and serve as instructors and coordinators for a series of demonstration projects and workshops in Holy Cross. Stipends, per diem and travel assistance are available. To learn how you can be involved in this effort please visit: http://www.iptw.org and www.ptn.org

Mobile Preservation Unit (MPU)
The Mobile Preservation Unit (MPU) will be housed in a 32-foot RV staffed by members of PTN and allied preservation professionals, and will serve as a local resource center for property owners who need help to repair their damaged historic homes and buildings. The MPU will be available to property owners of Holy Cross, the Ninth Ward and other historic neighborhoods of New Orleans beginning in late May 2006, and continuing for a period of up to one year. Experts in the building trades and preservation will meet with property owners to provide information, identify resources, and schedule on-site consultations and offer direct "hands on" assistance with repairs. The self-contained RV will provide housing for team members and a base of operations at locations in the Holy Cross neighborhood to serve as a continuing and clearly identifiable presence and neighborhood resource. The MPU will also serve as a base for contacts with the large and experienced network of PTN members and other preservation professionals who can be called on for technical assistance and consultation as required.

Demonstration Projects and Workshops
WMF and PTN are planning a series of traditional building and historic preservation demonstration projects and workshops in Holy Cross. Coordinating with the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association to select sites, the partners will undertake several repair and restoration projects on private residences and properties throughout the community. Educational opportunities in the building trades and historic preservation will be integrated into these stabilization and restoration projects. Field school participants include homeowners throughout New Orleans, high school students, local tradespeople and practicing professionals in preservation and allied fields. While the focus is education, the field school projects will have the dual benefit of repairing damaged homes for reoccupation. Scheduled for June 17-23, 2006, the first field school and project focuses on the repair of the historic wood floor at the Greater Little Zion Baptist Church. It is estimated that over 100,000 construction industry jobs will be needed to rebuild southern Louisiana over the next ten years. The rebuilding of New Orleans, specifically the rehabilitation of historic properties and neighborhoods, could provide much needed employment for returning residents. New Orleans has a long and noted history of excellence in the traditional building trades. The field schools are intended to engage local tradespeople as instructors and to serve as a catalyst for expanding jobs and skills training in the building trades and historic preservation.

IPTW 2006: Rebuilding Hope - Reclaiming Heritage
The field school program will culminate during the 10th annual International Preservation Trades Workshop scheduled for October 26-28, 2006. The International Preservation Trades Workshop (IPTW), sponsored by PTN, is the only annual event in North America which brings together the foremost practitioners of the traditional building trades to share knowledge and skills through hands on demonstrations and pilot projects. This year's IPTW will be unlike any other. In response to the Katrina disaster, the PTN community will gather in New Orleans to work together with residents of the historic Holy Cross District, one of the hardest hit neighborhoods, to "Rebuild Hope and Reclaim Heritage". Our goal is to make a tangible difference in a neighborhood which is working to rebuild and recover. In partnership with the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association, World Monuments Fund and other organizations, PTN is already working in the community through "hands on" workshops for home owners, tradespeople, and others, united in the belief that preservation is as much about people and community, as it is about buildings.

The Preservation Trades Network (PTN) is a 501(c)3 non-profit membership organization established in 1995, as an education, networking, and outreach organization. PTN was established on the principle that conservation of the built environment is fundamentally dependent on the quality, availability, and viability of the skilled trades. We believe that opportunities for education, employment, and compensation of people in the trades are directly reflected in the quality of the built environment, and the effective stewardship of cultural heritage. PTN is a registered provider of AIA/CEU Continuing Education Credits.
