Conversations With A Modern Architect Series: A Conversation With Jeff Kovel
October 13, 2010 |
Join Rejuvenation and Becca Cavell from THA Architects as we talk with cutting edge Portland architects. All proceeds go to the Street of Eames Fund, which supports two after-school programs for homeless children in Portland.
Jeff Kovel arrived in Portland, Oregon in 1996, drawn by a deep affection for the West. He founded Skylab Architecture three years later as a laboratory to explore a departure from an industry of mounting standardization. His work blurs the distinction between architecture and design, between the natural and synthetic, and between the past and the future. He holds an architecture degree from Cornell University.
Skylab Architecture works on residential and commercial projects. Departure, the firm's newest restaurant and lounge, is designed to be an urban escape. Skylab also designed the renowned Doug Fir Lounge and East Chinatown Lounge. The firm's other projects include award-winning LEED gold retail, a commercial office design that turns the cubicle into modules of practice, and a private residence bordering a 5000-acre wooded urban park that cantilevers to erase boundaries between inside and outside.
