Founded in 1957 as the Puget Sound Railway Historical Association, the Northwest Railway Museum is the largest and most comprehensive railway museum in Washington State. It provides the public with a place to experience the excitement of a working railroad and to see and understand the significance of railroads in the development of Washington and adjacent areas.
The restored 1890 Snoqualmie Depot is the centerpiece of the City of Snoqualmie’s Historic District. The collection includes steam locomotives, passenger and freight cars, and specialized railway equipment, and smaller railway artifacts including dining car china, specialized tools, signage, and lanterns. In addition, there are 5.5 miles of main line track, five railway bridges, 3.5 miles of historic right-of-way, and the depot itself.
A $2.4 million Conservation and Restoration Center facility was completed in 2006 and opened in January 2007 to perform collection care on railway transportation artifacts including locomotives, passenger and freight cars, and special maintenance vehicles such as snow plows. The most recent addition is The Train Shed, scheduled to open in August 2010, a large structure to house locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars, and maintenance-of-way cars. It will provide fundamental protection against rain, rapid changes in humidity or temperature, and light. These environmental factors present some of the greatest threats to the Museum’s collection of railway artifacts.
