The Historic Districts Council Presents The Secret Lives of Public Places
October 5, 2010 |
A series of tours highlighting some of the most original and rarely-seen spaces in New York. The Secret Lives of Public Places tours take attendees inside some of the most unique and spectacular landmarked spaces in the city, both big and small, to learn about their history and preservation.
Designed by renowned architect Eero Saarinen and Associates from 1956-1962, the TWA Terminal at JFK Airport is familiar across the world as an icon of modern architecture. Shaped to evoke a bird or the act of flight, the terminal was in use during the golden age of jet flight. Closed in 2001, the terminal is now undergoing interior and exterior restoration and will eventually be connected with the new Jet Blue passenger terminal, located immediately behind it, for use as an event space, museum or restaurant.
Richard Southwick, a partner and director of preservation at the firm of Beyer Blinder Belle Architects and Planners, who is overseeing the project, will guide attendees through the terminal, showcasing Saarinen’s masterful design as well as discussing the ongoing restoration work
