This Old House magazine is putting together our first-ever list of “The Best Places to Buy an Old House” for an upcoming issue—but we need your help to do it right.
Our goal is simple: We want to spread the word to our old-house-loving readers about neighborhoods and towns they may never have heard of, but that have dozens of beautiful, affordable, architecturally significant, or even, historic houses that might be appealing to preservation-minded buyers. Can you think of any? If it’s included on our list, you can help ensure their survival and revitalization by getting the word out to hundreds of thousands of our old-house-enthusiast readers nationwide. Maybe it’s a place that’s just starting to experience a domino effect from a preservation boom in a bordering or nearby area, or an urban neighborhood where you’ve noticed the seeds of revitalization being planted. As long as it’s a town, neighborhood or district you feel is worth promoting, we’re interested.
And we’re especially interested in places where the momentum for preservation is just getting started thanks to pioneers who have begun moving in and rehabbing houses, or where there’s an established preservation nonprofit that can provide guidance and information on preservation resources, or financial and tax incentives for those willing to restore endangered or neglected areas. Want to help? Then just send us:
- The name of the neighborhood, town or district you wish to nominate
- A brief history of the area
- A brief description of the types of houses available, including architectural styles, the period in which they were built; and their estimated cost.
- A short paragraph on why you think the area deserves to be included on our list.
Any information on your organization, or any other preservation organizations in the area is helpful, as are photos, or Web links, and info on tax or financial incentives. If you’d like, we will credit and link to your organization’s Web site in the story.
Once we’ve put together an initial list, we’ll look at other factors, such as schools, municipal services, crime stats, and property values, to determine which ones make the final cut. Nominations are due no later than June 8, 2007. Please send information to This Old House Associate Editor, Keith Pandolfi at keith_pandolfi@timeinc.com.
