Christmas at the Village

December 11, 2010

Our annual Christmas at the Village celebrates: “Christmas around the World” in Old Economy Village, a National Historic Landmark Site. Family and friends can tour the historic site decorated with the traditions and customs of nationalities from around the world and enjoy area church choirs singing their ethnic Christmas carols while we light  our Christmas Tree on the cobblestone pathway.

In the Weihnachtsmarkt many  vendors and craftsmen will be selling handmade wooden items, toys, jewelry, scherenschnitte, hand-blown ornaments, pottery, clocks, rag rugs, art work, jellies and jams, candles and candle holders, honey products, tatted linens, naturally dyed yarns, herbal products, and a variety of items by local tinsmiths, blacksmiths and broom makers.

Little ones can meet “Belsnickel”, our German Santa, make crafts & play games in the classroom or visit das Kinderhaus and pretend to be a young Harmonist preparing Christmas dinner in the miniature size kitchen. Story telling, candy sticks, many hands-on activities and horse drawn carriage rides will add to the excitement.

This year’s entertainment includes performances by the 1830 Orchestra in St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Old Economy Village Choir will sing in the Feast Hall then join in the sing-a long around the Christmas tree. Tours of St. John’s Lutheran Church are available every half hour until the live Nativity begins at 5pm.

Homemade apple strudel, hot spiced cider & hot chocolate will be offered in the village along with delicious food from “Around the World” prepared by members of the St. John’s Church, the original house of worship of the Harmonist Society, across the street from the village.
