Preservation Toolbox No. 7: Preserving History with Moving Images

December 2, 2010

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance (ETPA) and Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound (TAMIS) will present an interactive workshop about preserving film and audio recordings. On December 2, 2010 at 6:30 ETPA will host the Preservation Toolbox No. 7: Preserving the Past with Moving Pictures at the East Tennessee History Center at 601 South Gay Street in Downtown Knoxville.

The workshop will include rare footage from the December 1952 Christmas Parade in Downtown Knoxville, scenes from Cas Walker’s show and commercials, Downtown Maryville during the holidays, Rockwood in 1951, and much more. This material provides an unmatched glimpse of life and the built environment in East Tennessee. In addition to moving images, the presentation will also include rare audio recordings from the collection, including the first known recording of Chet Atkins.

Bradley Reeves and Louisa Trott, film archivists, established TAMIS (Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound) in November 2005. Since then they have volunteered their time and resources to tracking down historic images and recordings of the region. In a short space of time they have built up a large collection of film, video, and sound recordings relating to the history and culture of East Tennessee.

Bradley will also discuss the preservation techniques for a variety of mediums and the importance of preserving the material, how to locate and digitize the collections, and will bring along examples of decaying, fragile media. Bradley is a native of Knoxville, Tennessee with a background in audio-visual archiving. A graduate of the L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation at the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, Reeves has worked on film collections at the National Archives, Library of Congress, and the Archives of Appalachia. Reeves has worked on preserving silent films made during Hollywood's first golden era in the 1920s, regional home movies, military and government film, educational and industrial film, television newsfilm, lost regional television shows, and all types of recorded audio media. Reeves recently participated in a preservation project reformatting and cataloguing portions of an extensive 50 year collection of 16mm newsfilm and obsolete video formats originating from a local Knoxville television station WBIR-TV, Channel 10.

Light refreshments will be served. Please call or email Knox Heritage at 865-523-8008 or egarlington@knoxheritage.org to RSVP for the event.

ETPA was founded in 2009 serve the 16-county East Tennessee region. ETPA is made up of representatives from all 16 counties and works to help further historic preservation in the region through educational events, technical assistance, and by assisting existing organizations.
