Historic Mesquite's First Mesquite Moonlight Meander
May 20-21, 2011 |
Join Historic Mesquite, Inc. (HMI) for its first Mesquite Moonlight Meander through Mesquite Cemetery, May 20 and 21. The event is an educational program created to highlight the contributions of six of Mesquite’s early pioneers and to disseminate information about how to care for cemetery monuments, what the symbolism represents on older headstones and why cemeteries should not be feared but held dear as memorials to our ancestors.
The program entails a walking tour through marked, lighted paths where actors portraying the deceased will tell you about their lives and what they contributed to the community. There will be six tours held per evening – three groups an hour – with approximately 15 people per tour. Tours will start at 20 minute intervals and ticket purchasers may choose which date/time they would like to attend (first come, first served).
Prices are $8 for adults, $6 for students 12 to 17 years, and $4 for children 8 to 11 years. The event is not appropriate for those younger. Tickets will go on sale March 7.
Actors will consist of HMI directors and friends, as well as members of the Mesquite Community Theater. Research was conducted with family members, when possible, and local historians. Those family members also gave HMI permission to highlight their ancestors. For more information, please contact (972) 216-6468. http://www.cityofmesquite.com/hmi.
